Columbus Museum of Art

The Columbus Museum of Art is located in Columbus, Ohio. It is situated in downtown Ohio on East Broad Street.

Introduction

The Columbus Museum of Art was formally opened in 1931 on 22nd January. The art museum had initially focused on European and American art from the early modern period. Recently the exhibitions at the museum have broadened to include contemporary arts and a collection of photographs. The galleries of the Columbus Museum of Art are brightly colored in various colors instead of the plain white cubes preferred by contemporary galleries. The pre-19th century paintings are displayed in the “salon style”. The paintings are hung above and next to one another instead of being placed in single rows.

Collections at Columbus Museum of Art:

The main attractions in the permanent collection of the Columbus Museum of Art include early Cubist paintings of Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris. Other attractions are works of art by Degas, Matisse, Edward Hopper and Norman Rockwell. The museum also has a noteworthy collection of paintings by George Bellows, a native of Columbus. The photography collection at the Columbus Museum of Art includes works of Bernice Abbott and Eugene Atget. Ever since the art museum in Columbus has been featuring contemporary arts, it has been subject to a lot of criticism. Critics are of the opinion that the museum has been too bold in its decision to display contemporary art. Especially since the Wexner Center for the Arts, a gallery focused on contemporary art is situated quite close to the Columbus Museum of Art. The Columbus Museum of Art also features temporary and traveling shows regularly. One of the most popular such shows were Renoir's Women consisting of more than 30 works by the Impressionist and a glass sculpture exhibit by Dale Chihuly. The giant and chaotic glass sculptures were displayed in the middle of the traditional painting galleries.

The Columbus Museum of Art also has an outdoor sculpture gallery, a cafe and an interactive exhibit designed for educating children.
