The Denver Museum of Art is the art museum of Denver Colorado. The museum is well known for its vast collection of American Indian Art and the world wide collection of works comprising more than 55,000 pieces.
History and Background of the Denver Museum of Art:
The Denver Museum of Art was founded in 1893 as the Denver Artists Club. The Denver museum has had a number of homes since being opened. It started from the library to a mansion in downtown Denver, County Building and finally to its current location on 14th Avenue Parkway. The name of the museum was changed from the Denver Artists Club to the Denver Art Museum in 1932 during relocating to the City and County building. The Denver Museum of Art was shifted to its current location in 1949. Along with new premises, the Denver museum added a children’s art activities center in the beginning of 1950. In 1971 the Denver Art Museum expanded to include a building popularly known as the North Building. Recently the museum had another expansion and added the Frederic C. Hamilton Building to its sprawling complex. The 356,000 square foot museum currently includes a collection gallery space, three temporary exhibition venues, and an auditorium capable of seating 280 people.
Collections at Denver Museum of Art:
The Denver Museum of Art has eight departments according to which the collection is divided. The departments are Architecture, Design and Graphics, Asian Art, Modern & Contemporary Arts, Native Arts (American Indian, Oceanic and African), New World (pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial), Painting & Sculpture (European and American), Western Art and Textile Art. These collections are among the permanent displays at the museum in Denver. Apart from the permanent display, the museum often has special exhibitions by contemporary artists or other selected collections.
The Denver Museum of Art hosts many events such as lectures, films, special tours, free kids’ events, classes, camps as well as various other family events to promote social interaction. The education department of Denver Museum of Art has a national as well as international role in areas of research for making museums visits enjoyable, creating innovative installed learning materials and interactive learning programs for the youth.
