Grand Rapids Art Museum



The Grand Rapids Art Museum located in downtown was founded in 1910. The Grand Rapids Art Museum has hosted exhibitions of national talent and regional peculiarity. The museum collection spans Renaissance to Modern art, with particular strength in 19th and 20th century paintings, prints and drawings.

Museum Expansion:

The new building of Grand Rapids Art Museum is located at the Monroe centre 101 in downtown grand rapids. The 125,000 square foot museum is located nearby a city park which was designed by Maya Lin. The construction of the museum is still in progress which may come to an end in the late summer 2007. The new federal building of the Grand Rapids Art Museum will open to public from 3rd June 2007. The museum has different opening hours. On Fridays it remains open from 12 pm to 8:30 pm, Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and on Sundays 12pm to 5 pm.



Exhibition, Educational Programs:

The museum organizes many educational programs in different galleries like ‘Seeing is believing’, a space for family trip with different art interactive process and art materials. Similarly Junior Fellows is a program organized by the Grand Rapids Art Museum for sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students who demonstrate interest and flair for the visual arts. The Grand Rapids Art Museum has also organized several exhibitions. Some recent exhibitions are like the 2007 winter exhibition; this exhibition was participated by Mathias Alten and Artists of Michigan where more than eighty paintings by past and present artists of Michigan were featured. Every year thousands of visitors visit the Grand Rapids Art Museum. With the increase in the number of visitors visiting the museum more stress is being given on the art preservation.

Grand Rapids Gallery Association:

Many works by the well-known regional artist like Mathias Alten (1877-1938) was also shown in the exhibition. Other than these some works by contemporary Michigan artists like Overvoorde, Steven Duren, Sharon Sandberg, Chris Stoffel, Roger Bruinekool and Jim Karsina were incorporated in the exhibition. The Grand Rapids Gallery Association is also an active branch of the museum. It is a versatile association focusing on the area's varied and inspiring fine arts society.
