The Museum of fine Arts Houston is located in Houston. It is the largest art museum in Texas and thereby largest art museum in USA. It is in the east of Los Angeles, south of Chicago and west of Washington.
Historical Perspective:
The original building of The Museum of fine Arts, Houston was designed by William Ward Watkin. It was opened to common public in 1924. This was the first art museum building located in Texas. One section of the museum called Cullinan hall was designed by Miss Van der Rohe. This section was opened to common public in 1958. Some collections of the museum are part of donations; the finest and one of the largest donations which the museum received in its entire history was the home of Ima Hogg in 1957. The museum was also donated by Bayou Bend and her collection of decorative arts and American paintings.
Major Art Collections:
The museum has a permanent art collection of above 53,000 artworks belonging from earlier days till present. About 60 paintings gathered from different museums make the finest collections of European art. These are some exceptional artworks as learning resource for visual art based on different perspectives across the world. Almost all the artworks at the Museum of fine Arts Houston reflect wide variety of geographical regions and historic periods. In the category of African art there are collections more than 2,500 years. There is also collection of American Painting and sculpture; it includes masterworks by Frederic Remington.
There are antiquities; the museum also holds the Glassell collection of Indonesian gold. The decorative art collection includes beautiful art of design collection by Helen Williams Drutt.
The Native American art collection includes artworks from deserts and forests. The photography selections focus on the entire world. The Museum of fine Arts Houston includes art collection of oceanic art, pre Columbian art, prints and drawing works, includes Rienzi collection and textiles and costumes.
The museum remains open on all days except on Mondays. The museum opens on different days with separate timings; like on Tuesday and Wednesday it is open from 10:00 am to 5:00pm., Thursday 10:00 am to 9:00pm, Friday and Saturday 10:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
