National Museum of Mexican Art



The National Museum of Mexican Art was formerly known as the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum. It displays Mexican. Latino and Chicano art works.

History:

The National Museum of Mexican Art was established in 1892 by Carlos Tortolero. It is situated Chicago Illinois in the Pilsen area. The present building in which the museum is housed was inaugurated on March 27, 1987. It is the only Latino museum to gain accreditation from the American association of Museums. The National Museum of Mexican Art was founded with the aim of displaying Mexican art and culture as united with American culture. The term used was sin fronteras (without borders). The museum was initially called the Mexican Fine Arts Museum or Mexican fine Arts Center Museum. The name of the museum was changed to National Museum of Mexican Art in December 2006 to reflect its status as the only Latino member of the America Association of Museums.



Collections at the National Museum of Mexican Art:

The permanent collection at the National Museum of Mexican Art has prestigious works of art by Mexican artists and relics of Mexican history. The permanent exhibit is named “Mexicanidad: Our Past is Present. It explores Mexican history in five different stages; Pre-Cuauhtemoc Mexico, colonial Mexico, Mexico from Independence to Revolution, Post-Mexican Revolution to Present–day Mexico and The Mexican Experience in the US. The National Museum of Mexican Art has an annual exhibition every October which displays altars and Dia de los Muertos related works by artists living in and around Chicago as well as international artists.

The National Museum of Mexican Art also has arts education, performance and community programs. Since 1994 the National Museum of Mexican Art has been hosting two new festivals. These are the Del Corazon: the Mexican Performing Arts Festival and the Sor Juana Festival which is dedicated to an important scholar from Mexico. The National Museum of Mexican Art also runs a radio station called WRTE.
