Phoenix Art Museum

Historical Perspective:

The Phoenix Art Museum is located in Phoenix, Arizona. It was founded in 1936 at the Phoenix art center. Before being renamed as the Phoenix Art Museum, the museum was changed into the Phoenix fine art association. The founding director of the museum was Philip Campbell Curtis. The museum building has been designed as the Phoenix Point of Pride.

Art Collections:

Phoenix Art Museum showcases a wide collection of European, American, Latin, Asian, Western American, American, and Contemporary art and even fashion design. The museum also organizes major national and international exhibitions, a Museum Store, and an art museum café. The museum’s art section contains more than 2,400 art works in different mediums. The important of these are the paintings, paper works and sculptures. You will also find the range of early 20th century art represented by some famous modern art pioneers like Milton Avery, Josef Albers, Jean Arp, Jean Dubuffet, Max Beckmann, Marsden Hartley, John Ferren, Seymour Lipton, Barbara Hepworth, Joseph Stella, Florine Stettheimer and Pablo Picasso

Among the contemporary art range the museum includes exotic art works by famous artists like Billy Al Bengston, David Bates, Wallace Berman, Lee Bontecou, Hans Burkhardt, Robert Arneson, Joan Brown, Petah Coyne, Richard Diebenkorn, Nancy Dwyer, Nancy Grossman and many others.

The museum has opened a new space Ullman Center in some 2,500 square foot area. This section is entirely devoted to the art works by Philip Curtis. The centre has some growing art collections by the founder of the museum, a renowned Arizona artist. Other than these the centre also features the museum’s first interactive audiovisual presentation with latest ‘touch- screen’ computer technology. Providing a flat 42” plasma wall screen where the Curtis’ paintings and his life can easily be seen just with a fingertip touch across the screen.

Present Scenario:

The museum has got its present location in 1959 which was actually the former location of the Burton Barr Central Library. At present the total strength of collection includes 17,000 artworks spanning the centuries across the world.
