The art museum of St. Louis, Missouri is considered as one of the best art museums of United States. The official name of the museum is the Saint Louis Art Museum. The Saint Louis Art Museum is situated in Forest Park, St. Louis.

History of the Saint Louis Art Museum:

The Saint Louis Art Museum was established in 1879. The museum was initially called the Saint Louis School and Museum of Fine Arts. It used to be a department of the Washington University. In 1904 it served at the World Fair. The museum became a public city museum in 1906. In 1909, the museum was assigned an Organizing Board that later assumed complete control in 1912. The management of the Saint Louis Art Museum was later taken up by the Metropolitan Museum District. Sometime during 1950, an auditorium was added to the museum. The Saint Louis Art Museum underwent two significant expansions in 1906 and 1916. The building underwent restoration for 5 years from 1972. The restoration added a few modern structures to the original building. The museum has been steadily expanding its collection with money from public associations and individuals.

Collections at Saint Louis Art Museum:

The collection at Saint Louis Art Museum is of exceptional value and high quality. The collections include works from almost all cultures and time periods. The collection is divided into nine categories; African Art, American Art, Ancient and Islamic Art, Asian Art, Decorative Art and Design, European Painting and Sculpture, Modern Art, Oceanic art & Art of the Americas and Prints, Drawings and Photographs. The Modern Art collection has works of Matisse, Gauguin, Monet, Picasso and Van Gogh. Apart from these, there are also three Egyptian mummies.

Admission to the Saint Louis Art Museum is free. The museum offers art classes for people of all ages. There is a library where scholars can research about various art works. The Resource Center at the Saint Louis Art Museum provides posters, video tapes, info kits and various other materials for free. Guided tour services for groups of 20 to 60 people can be availed for free.
