San Antonio Museum of Arts

The San Antonio Museum of Art was a part of the two museums, Museum of Art and the Wittle Museum of Science and History, both of which were under the San Antonio Museum Association.

History of the San Antonio Museum of Art:

The San Antonio Museum of Art remained under the San Antonio Museum association until 1194, when the latter was dissolved. The museum had a significant growth in its fine arts collection during the early 1970's. The growth made the trustees think about getting a larger space to display the collections. Plans were made to purchase the Lone Star Brewery complex to turn it into the San Antonio Museum of Art. The museum was inaugurated in March 1981. The money for renovations was obtained through grants from the Economic Development Administration, the City of San Antonio, various private foundations and individuals, as well as a challenge grant from the National Endowments for the Arts. The San Antonio Museum of Art is located in San Antonio on 200 West Jones Avenue.

Openings and Other Details:

The San Antonio Museum of Art is open to the public on all days. Admission is free for members. Non members are charged varying rates for adults, children, seniors and students. The San Antonio Art Museum has special facilities for mobility impaired visitors. The museum of fine arts also has a café for its visitors. Photography inside the museum is permitted on certain conditions. Photographs are to be taken without using flash and pictures can be taken of the permanent collection galleries only. The San Antonio Museum of Art offers rental facilities for weddings and other events.

Collections at the San Antonio Museum of Art:

In the beginning, the museum put emphasis on American Art including pre-Columbian, Spanish Colonial and Latin American folk art. The collection at the San Antonio Museum of Art has increased significantly since then. It now includes American Art, Asian Art, Latin American Art, Oceanic Art, European Art, Western Antiquities and Modern Art. The collection of Asian Arts at the San Antonio Museum of Art is one of the best Asian Art collections of the country.
