History and Background of the Tacoma Art Museum:
The Tacoma Art Museum was established in November 1935. Initially it was named the Tacoma Art Association. The museum has been shifted to five different locations ever since it was established. It was first housed at the Jones Hall Tower at the University of Puget Sound; the museum was shifted to 742 Broadway, then a former jail house, an empty Bank of Washington Building and finally to its current location in Pacific Avenue. The Tacoma Art Museum was set up by volunteers until 1970. It receives outstanding community support even today.
Collection at Tacoma Art Museum:
The Tacoma Art Museum has built up a prestigious collection since its foundation in 1935.
It has art works of international, national as well as regional artists. The number of works owned by the museum is more than 32,000. The museum has major holdings in 19th century European, 20th century American, modern Northwest and Asian prints and contemporary Northwest and Asian prints.The museum own works by world famous artists like Mary Cassatt, Jean Baptiste, Camille Corot, Dale Chihuly, Edgar Degas, Robert Henri, Edward Hopper, Jacob Lawrence, Renoir, John Singer Sargent and Andrew Wyeth. The collection of Dale Chihuly sculptures are a part of the permanent display at the Tacoma Art Museum. Dale Chihuly held his first exhibition in the Tacoma Art Museum in 1968.
Mission of the Tacoma Art Museum:
The mission of the Tacoma Art Museum is to connect people through art. The collections, exhibitions and educational programs hosted by the Tacoma Art Museum are meant for the different Northwest communities.
The Tacoma Art Museum recently held an exhibition of the works of renowned artists Frida Kahlo. It showcased paintings of Frida kahlo from her childhood to her rise as a famous artist. The exhibition was organized by Throckmorton Fine Art of New York.
