Though canvas has been used for making different things the most conventional use of the fabric is as painting surface. Though Canvas is used for making different products like tents, sails, marquees, backpacks, fashion hand bags and different other things that can be made by canvasses but the fabric used for making these articles differ in quality to that of the fabric used for making an artist canvas.
Artist Canvas Texture:
Basically an artist's canvas differs in its texture from other canvasses. It also differs in its appearance, size, quality and different other aspects. Unlike other canvasses an artist canvas is first coated before painting. This coating is applied by stretching the texture along the stretcher. The coating of gesso is applied on canvas before painting onto it. Since earlier times artist canvas has been coated of using some traditional coatings but nowadays various alternative and more flexible canvas primers are available in present market. The most popular of all modern canvas primers is the synthetic latex paint composed of titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate.
Historical Perspective of Artist Canvas:
During the earlier days linen fabric materials were often used for making artist canvas. Canvases made of linen were only suitable for oil paintings. During the early 20th century artist canvas made of cotton came into use. Such canvasses were also called as cotton duck canvas. Due to its high price linen canvas was used by professional artists only. A canvas made of pure cotton fabric is considered as best for artworks since such canvasses stretches more properly and has an even mechanical weave. Cotton artist canvas is also highly economical.
Artist Canvas, Present Scenario:
In contemporary days an artist canvas is found in many small sizes. Different small prepared canvases with a cardboard backing are largely available in market. The prepared canvasses being small in size are not acid free hence their lifespan is very short compared to other canvasses. An artist canvas is created more properly allowing every freedom to an artist for painting. A properly created canvas always gives full satisfaction to an artist while coloring and applying brushstrokes.
