Canvas art suggests about paintings created on canvas. The term canvas in itself suggests about the art done on canvas. In the field of art canvas is only used for painting. Canvas art is different to other genre of art hence before painting a canvas is first coated with an outer coating. Though many other alternatives are available commercially, traditionally only gesso mixed with titanium di oxide has been used as primer or coating on canvas. Canvas is regarded as the most appropriate base for painting especially oil painting.
Many great canvas art has been created from time to time. The French work Madonna with Angels has been considered as one of the earliest artworks, still surviving. Till the 16th century, panels were used for painting in the place of canvas. The use of canvas by many artists began from the 17th century. During this century almost all the artists were following the traditional art form but the artists of later years Mantegna and Venetian contributed a lot in changing the style of canvas artwork.
Before beginning with his canvas art an artist first coats the canvas with some coatings in order to make the canvas sturdier in bearing the layers of colors applied. Traditionally only coated canvas has been used for painting but some modern artists like Jackson Pollock, Francis Bacon, Kenneth Noland, Ronnie Landfield, Dan Christensen, Larry Zox and others also used uncoated or raw canvas fro painting.
The Starry Night created by Vincent Van Gogh, Van Gogh's series of sunflower paintings, Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali are some of the great canvas art created by famous artists.
The canvas art of present times differ from that of created during early years. Though the basic style of painting is still same to the old style but still some changes has been noticed between early and modern techniques. The technique of canvas preparation has also changed enormously.
