Drawing

Drawing is a visual art which involves making of a two-dimensional figure, image or shape on a surface preferably paper, using any tool. The various tools of drawing may include graphite pencils, pen and ink, inked brushes, wax color pencils, crayons, charcoals, pastels, markers, stylus, or various metals like silverpoint. Draftsman or Draughtsman is the person who does drawing proficiently.

Difference Between Drawing and Painting

There is clear-cut difference between drawing and painting. It’s mainly because of the same tools that are used for painting and drawing the confusion arises. But there is difference in the operation of both visual arts. A layering of pigments by a brush on a cloth or a prepared surface is what done in painting while in drawing dark lines are drawn on the surface of paper.
There is a difference in the process of drawing and painting too. In drawing, a healthy emphasis is given on composition, observation and problem solving. This is often considered exploratory too. On the other hand, traditional painting involves execution or finishing of an artwork once completed.

Fields and Media of Drawing

We find representational things in drawing, where the artist sketches the scenes viewed, remembered or fancied. Drawing involves life-like resemblance (like traditional portraits), architectural drawing or other loosely realistic matters (like sketches), highly stylized (caricatures, cartoons), or abstract.
You may find two kinds of drawing media- water based or dry.  Water based media includes marker, pen and ink and dry media includes graphite, charcoal, pastels, conte, silver point.

Since the invention of paper the practice of drawing began and till present times it’s been continuing. It will yet sustain for a long time, the current situation suggests. Nowadays paper comes in a large range of variety. Some paper manufacturing is done only for the purpose of drawing like drawing sheets. The pencils, markers, ink pens and sketch pens etc. are also specially manufactured for this purpose.

Exponents of Drawing

During 15th century, the eminent draftsmen were Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, Michelangelo and Raphael. In 17th century, Claude, Nicolas Poussin, Rembrandt, and Peter Paul Rubens created famous drawings. Great drawings in the 20th century have been created by Max Beckmann, Jean Dubuffet, Arshile Gorky, Paul Klee, Oscar Kokoschka, Jules Pascin, Pablo Picasso and Anthony Waichulis.
