The Early Picasso Paintings

The Blue and the Rose periods are the most significant periods of his early career. The blue period comprised sombre blue-tinted paintings and social outcasts such as prostitutes and clowns were pepicted in this period, while the Rose Period was charcterized by a more cheery carefree style. Pink and orange were the recurrent colors. Harlequins were repeatedly featured.





The Old Guitarist (1903) – Picasso Painting

This painting was painted right after the death of a close friend. A perfect example of the Blue period, it is sombre in mood and is overwhelmingly “blue”. I depicts a blind man in tatters,with a guitar in his hands.

Garçon à la Pipe (Boy with a Pipe) 1905 – Picasso Painting

This Oil Painting depicts a young boy with a pipe in his left hand. Its is a part of what has been classified as the Rose period. The colors are bright, warm and cheery, and the paintings have a carefree bohemian air about them . This painting was sold for a staggering $104.1 Million dollars in 2004.



The Later Picasso Paintings

Picasso collaboration with fellow Cubist Painter Georges Braques produced many brilliant abstract works. This phase was charcterized by cubism.

Guernica (1937) – Picasso Painting

It is probably his most popular work. This painting was a condemnation of Nazi Germany's bombing of Guernica,Spain. This aerial bombing killed an estimated 1600 people. It is a huge Oil Painting, and presents a scene of death,violence and brutality.

Dora Maar au Chat ( Dora Maar with Cat) 1941 – Picasso Painting

This potrait of his mistress with a small cat perched on her shoulder is a specimen his cubist style. Contrasting colors are used to aachieve outstanding special effects. No wonder that today its one of the worlds most expensive paintings.
