Before Picasso, many other great Montmartre artists also portrayed this Cabaret. Au Lapin Agile was originally called "Cabaret des Assassins". According to a popular local legend, Cabaret received this name (Au Lapin Agile) after a band of assassins broke in and killed the owner's son. In that year, the famous French artist Andre Gill painted the sign suggesting its permanent name. It was a picture of a rabbit jumping out of a saucepan and residents began calling their neighborhood night-club "Le Lapin à Gill", "Gill's rabbit". However, in the painting Picasso portrayed himself as a harlequin and Frédé as playing guitar.

The expensive painting gathered immense popularity. For several years, the painting was kept in "Au Lapin Agile" cabaret. In 1912, Frede the owner of the Cabaret, sold the painting for twenty dollars. The famous painting of Au Lapin Agile was finally auctioned in 1989 at Sotheby's New York. The auction was held by the daughter of Joan Whitney Payson. It was sold to Walter H. Annenberg for 41 million dollars. However, the decided price was $ 67.5 and finally the painting managed to mare its presence in the list of most expensive paintings.
