Police Gazette



The Artist, William De Kooning:

William De Kooning was a great abstract painter born in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He created many exotic landscape paintings. During the Second World War, De Kooning painted many abstract expressionist paintings which were labeled as action painting. De Kooning painted almost all types of paintings. From about 1928 De Kooning painted many still life paintings. By early 1930s he started experimenting with abstract expressions, using living shapes and simple geometric compositions. That suggested artists absolute contrast sense of creating formal elements that prevails in his work throughout his career. Kooning also worked on many federal art projects and won the Logan Medal of Arts. Some artworks of Kooning, especially, those he created during 1938 a series of male figures including Two Men Standing, Man, and Seated Figure, were found highly influenced of Gorky's style of painting.



The Painting:

Police Gazette was an abstract painting created by William de Kooning in the year 1955. It was a landscape painting created on a canvas. It is one of the most important landscape paintings by the artist left in private hands. The exotic painting is a one of the De Kooning's more abstract canvases, primarily based on yellow, red and green it was created by Kooning while he was living in New York City before moving to East Hampton.

Painting Auction:

Police Gazette created by William De Kooning went for auction in the year 2006. The painting was sold by David Geffen in a private sale in the Richard Gray Gallery. This one is one of the most expensive paintings bought by Steven A. Cohen for $63.5 million. Police Gazette has a long history of succession by some distinguished owners, including Sidney Janis, the dealer, who bought the painting from Kooning; dealer and collector Eugene Thaw; and Mr. and Mrs. Scull. The Sculls sold it at Sotheby's in 1973 for $180,000, which made a record price at that time.
