Portrait of Duke Cosimo I de'Medici



The painting 'Portrait of Duke Cosimo I de'Medici' was one of the masterpieces created by Jacopo Da Carucci Pontormo in 1537. The painting portrayed Cosimo I de' Medici who was the Duke of Florence from 1537 to 1574, and who also reigned as the first Grand Duke of Tuscany from 1569.

The Painting (Portrait of Duke Cosimo I de'Medici):

'Portrait of Duke Cosimo I de'Medici' was painted by Jacopo da Carucci Pontormo in the year 1537. This was an oil work on a canvas sized 36 1/4x28 1/3 in, 92x72 cm. The painting is a portrait of Cosimo I de'Medici the duke of Tuscany. From a very first sight the painting appears highly expressional.



The Artist:

Jacopo da Carucci Pontormo was an Italian artist and portraitist from Florentine school. The artist was especially famous for his use of twisted poses and angles. In most of his paintings the artist has used many unnatural colors disclosing his irrational thoughts and impatient temperament. The great artists created many different artworks influenced by different taste and temperament some of his early works were like:

    Other than these few he painted many still life abstract and other types of paintings. Some where his own efforts while some others were found influenced of his contemporaries.

    Portrait of Duke Cosimo I de'Medici went for auction in the year 1989. This auction was organized by Frick Collection in Christie's New York. The most expensive painting was sold $35.2 to the Getty Museum.
