Bernd Obergassel is based in Dortmund, Germany. Bernd Obergassel specializes in painting small pictures. His paintings do not are almost always 30x40 cm or 60x80 cm. Bernd Obergassel prefers painting small pictures because they have to be seen up close. He believes, viewing pictures from close gives the viewer greater intimacy with the figures. The first of Bernd Obergassel's works was created in 1993.

Bernd Obergassel decided to start painting after visiting an exhibition at the “Sternenwarte Bochum”. At the start of his career he read books on famous artists, this helped him to find a point of reference.



The works of Bernd Obergassel cannot be defined by a certain style or genre. Bernd Obergassel creates figures which are technical but emotional. They are named “The ZONS” They represent a poetic interaction of biomorphic structures. All of his paintings are oil on canvas. In 2006 Bernd Obergassel started making three dimensional figures out of plaster with acrylic paint. Bernd Obergassel paints figures which give the viewer a positive feeling. A few of his well known works are Rendevous, Rainball-ZONs, Dance for Joy and The Young And The Old.

Bernd Obergassel had an attraction towards technical things from his childhood. After leaving school he took up an apprenticeship as a constructor of electrical machinery. Bernd Obergassel has a degree in Electrical Engineering and has a post graduate degree as a Business Administration Engineer. Bernd Obergassel believes artists are similar to engineers. They are both creative.
