Evan Oberholster was born in 1956 and is a native of South Africa. Evan Oberholster completed a Fine art degree at the University of Pretoria, and then moved to Amsterdam to work as an artist and illustrator. In 1994 he returned to South Africa and has been living there ever since.
Evan Oberholster held his first exhibition in 1999. They were oil paintings of nude figures. The explicit paintings created an uproar and made it onto the front page news. Evan Oberholster has held two more solo exhibitions since then and has been a part of several group exhibitions. In 2001, his work was part of a group exhibition featuring some of South Africa's most prominent artists. The exhibition was titled "Å 4000 - Å 8000" and was held at the Knysna Fine Art Gallery. In May 2002 the works of Evan Oberholster were displayed in another exhibition named “The Art of Colour" which was the highlight of the Knysna Pink Loerie Festival. The last solo exhibition of Evan Oberholster was held at the Obz Café in Cape Town, South Africa in December 2002.
Evan Oberholster paints industrially in his studio in Cape Town, South Africa. His work is the expression of his fascination with the sensuality of human figure. Evan Oberholster has managed to develop the theme of the nude as a part of everyday life. He tries to work past the conventional sentimental and romanticized depiction of the nude human body.
