Julie Oakes was born in Nelson in British Columbia. She was born with the name Julie Cowan and after her marriage to sir Christopher Oakes, she became Julie Oakes. Julie Oakes is well known as a provocative, culturally critical, multi dimensional artist. Julie Oakes expresses herself through painting, drawing, writing, video and performances
Her works are autobiographical comments on communal fears. One of the first kinetic art shows in Canada was installed by Julie Oakes while she was working at the Mackenzie Art Gallery in Regina.
Julie Oakes attended the Banff School of Fine Arts when she was sixteen years old. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Manitoba. Julie Oakes has two masters' degrees. One in Art and Art Professions from New York University and another in Critical Theory and Liberal Studies from the New School University in New York. Her first public group exhibition was held at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg. Julie Oakes was granted two successive Canada Council Grants that took her from Europe to India and back. She has also studied “thangka” painting and Intensive Chinese Language and Tibetan History. Julie Oakes supported community arts as the director of Headbones Gallery in Vernon, British Columbia for ten years during the 1990's. She has two children, a boy and a girl. Julie Oakes currently lives and works from her studios in New York as well as British Columbia.
