Bunky Echohawk was born in Toppenish, Washington, on the Yakama Nation Reservation. Since he grew up in a non-Indian world, he had to constantly define his identity as a Pawnee/ Yakama Indian. Bunky Echohawk has done an Associate of Art degree in Creative Writing from the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His paintings are an extension of his writings. Bunky Echohawk achieved his goals with his writing skills and it gave him a sense of freedom. He has written the famous play Essence . The works of Bunky Echohawk have been published in various magazines. He has been a part of many lectures and workshops. Bunky Echohawk has participated in many art auctions at New Mexico and Nevada. He is also an active member of various organizations like Boulder Country Arts Alliance, Pani Arts Association, Denver Indian Center and others.
