Merlin Emrys



Merlin Emrys was born and brought up in New York City. Growing up in a city exposed Merlin Emrys to a large array of artwork at local museums and galleries. In 1974 Merlin Emrys left New York to settle down in Northern California. Merlin Emrys became a member of the Findhorn Community in Scotland in 1976 which provided him with many opportunities for personal growth and transformation. As a result Merlin Emrys deepened his connection with the inner world and spirit as well as his relationship with nature. Merlin Emrys returned to California in 1980 and shifted to Santa Fe in 1890.



Merlin Emrys took up painting after the death of his father. It started on an impulse and came with an undeniable force. The inspiration for the paintings of Merlin Emrys comes from the splendor of the land and the incandescence of light on the landscape. His inner experiences also serve as inspiration for Merlin Emrys.

Merlin Emrys paints in Abstract Expressionism. Most of the paintings of Merlin Emrys are created using palette knives of various shapes and sizes. Most of Merlin Emrys' works have been painted inside his studio with color balanced fluorescent lighting although some of the paintings have been done outside. In the works of Merlin Emrys, he explores the edges of awareness, where there is an intermingling of the conscious and the unconscious through color and form. Merlin Emrys believes in the power of art to uplift, inspire, challenge and transform. The paintings of Merlin Emrys are basically energy made visible. To create his paintings, Merlin Emrys confronts himself, the unknown, the shining emptiness to go deep into a kind of controlled madness for the energy and spirit to show through.
