Roderick Brown



Roderick Brown is a contemporary watercolor artist. He was born in Western Australia in Kalgoorlie. Roderick Brown spent thirty years of his life in the dry and isolated gold mining town of Kalgoorlie. As a youngster Roderick Brown had great freedom in exploring the surrounding mines and bush. He also watched his father paint in oils and sketch the portraits of local characters in charcoal and ink. The desire to study art was born within Roderick Brown during this time.






Roderick Brown has lived in Australia, Europe and the USA along with his family. He has visited over 40 countries around the world, inspiring his life and assembled on fundamentals obtained in his homeland. Roderick Brown decided to unleash his artistic traits by taking up oil painting, while living in Sydney. At that time he was a member of the Castle Hill Art Society and the Hornsby Art Society. In the early 1980's Roderick Brown took to watercolor painting and has stuck to the medium since then. Roderick Brown paints studies of people, buildings, landscapes and still life. The painting style of Roderick Brown captures strong and vibrant colors, usually applied alla prima. The early influences in the paintings of Roderick Brown were the Australian Heidelberg school of painters, French impressionists Monet and Cezanne and American watercolor artists Winslow Homer and John singer Sargent. Roderick Brown is also an admirer of contemporary American watercolor painter Charles Reid.

Roderick Brown has exhibited in many public shows while living in Sydney. His paintings form a part of private collections in USA, Canada, Sweden, UK, Japan and Australia. Roderick Brown won the Gold Medal, First Prize in the Gold Age Art of Painting Competition under the sponsorship of the Italian Consul to celebrate the founding of the Italian Republic Festa Della Republica in 2002. The works of Roderick Brown were also shown in an international exhibition in 2002 in Riva Del Garda, Italy. A watercolor work by Roderick Brown won the first prize. Some of her important works are Strength of Character and Vision, Campo San Pontolon, Campo San Barnaba, Afternoon Stroll, Peaches and Cream and Beautiful Evening.
