Fine Art Posters



Fine art posters are the large piece of printed paper designed for attaching over a wall or other vertical surface. Usually posters are either purely textual or purely graphical or even a mixture of both but fine art posters are usually graphical. There are different types of posters such as comic book posters, event posters, boxing posters, concert posters, educational posters, classroom posters, fan poster, affirmation poster, music posters and many other poster types.






History of Posters:

Originally posters emerged in the form of placards and posted bills. Such poster types have been used for advertising and announcements. The advent of lithographic techniques improved the quality and production of fine art posters to a great extent. By 1890s the poster art spread throughout Europe. Many poster artists created nice poster art during this period the first of all these poster art was the Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Jules Chéret. Cheret was a great pencil artist and used many striking colors and created about 1000 advertisements for theatres, exhibition and products. By the end of 19th century and in the era of Belle Epoque poster art became more popular. Some posters had great artistic merit including the World's Fairs and colonial exhibition posters.



Printing Technique:

Posters are produced by applying different printing techniques. Fine art posters are also printed by hand but often in limited editions. Often the posters are printed on one side and the other side is left blank. There are pin-up sized fine art posters which are often printed on A3 standard silk paper in full color.

Famous Poster Artists:

Great Poster artists such as Théophile Steinlen, Albert Guillaume, Leonetto Cappiello and others are some noted poster artists. Some of their art works were transferred to advertising magazines and even for social and political commentary. Poster artists of contemporary period include such famous names as Akiyama Takashi, Ferenc Baráth, Michal Batory, Michel Bouvet, André François, Stephan Bundi, Shigeo Fukuda and many others.
