Usually posters are large paper pieces which are designed for attaching on different wall surfaces. Like any normal poster large posters are also designed differently for graphic and textual works. The reason behind Posters being large in size is that they are more eye catching and could convey a piece of information more effectively. There are large character posters which are usually hand written and are well mounted using bold Chinese characters. Such posters were often used as a medium of protest, propaganda and popular communication.
Large posters became more popular during the Cultural Revolution with the publication of image of Dazibao on 25th May, 1966. This poster was noticed by Mao Zedong he broadcast the poster nationally and also published it in the People's Daily. Large posters having character illustration became very popular and started being used at different places such as for sophisticated debates, satirical entertainments and other such places. Large posters became common again in 1978 during the Democracy Wall Movement. On those days one of the most famous posters was The Fifth Modernization which became popular for its image depicting call for democracy.
Posters became more common with the advent of lithographic techniques and cheap printing techniques which encouraged both the production and quality. Though different other sized posters are also created the most accepted conventional size for a poster is around 24 by 36 inches. A large full color poster, up to a size of 30 metres long and 1 metres is another common size of the large posters.
There are large posters used for creating country maps. Some world maps are created on a size of 36"x 24" inches fully colored. Often large posters are used for movies displaying the scenes and characters of a particular movie.
