Poster Art



Posters are large printed paper pieces which are designed to attach on wall or vertical surface. There are different types of poster art some are purely textual while others are completely graphical. Poster art is different than other art styles hence to make more effective posters are designed to be eye catching as well as informative.

Posters have been used for production of many famous art works. Traditionally the most common size for poster art is around 24 by 36 inches. Poster art is done on several other paper sizes too.




Historical Perspective of Poster Art:

By the 1890s, the poster art technique had spread throughout Europe during this time many reputed artists created poster art. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Jules Chéret were the first to create poster art. Chéret was called as the father of advertisement placards. Cheret was a great pencil artist and a great scene decorator too. In almost all his artworks Chéret used striking characters, contrast and bright colors, and created more than 1000 advertisements. Posters and poster art became so popular in no time that it evoked a huge demand for it. The commercial success of poster art was so much that some of the artists were in great demand. During this time different theatre shows use to hire personally their favorite artist to do the poster for a forthcoming performance. The immense popularity of poster art led to an exhibition in1884 in Paris. By the 1890s, poster art widely spread in other parts of Europe too. By the end of the 19th century, and during the Belle Époque, poster art became more popular. Alphonse Mucha and Eugène Grasset were the great poster artists known for their Art Nouveau style and creating female figures. In the United States, posters did not become that popular. There it was only used only for some basic commercial needs such as for delivering written messages.

Present Scenario of Poster Art:

The present style of poster art is widely developed the inception of modern technologies such as computers has added enough potentiality to modern poster art.
