Shah Jahan hunting lions at Burhanpur

Miniature Painting

This beautiful miniature painting depicts the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan on a hunting expedition. The handmade painting illustrates the legendary incident of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan on a hunting expedition.

The legend goes that several lions were spotted in a hunting ground and were reported to Shah Jahan. The emperor ordered that the lions should be enclosed in a strong net. The lions were then driven to the Zaynabad garden in Burhanpur where the emperor mounted on an elephant and shot a lion with his gun.
