This handmade ragamala miniature painting animates raga Megh Malhar. It is one of the ragas included in Guru Granth Sahib, by Guru Arjun Singh in the seventeenth century. 'Megha' means the clouds and raga Megha Malhar is the initiator of the monsoon rains. In this picture, we can see this raga personified as Krishna who blows his divine conch to invite the rains. He stands under a cloudy sky, attended by two women. The white cranes fly back to their safe nests while lightning flashes across the darkened sky.
