Alberta College of Art and Design



Alberta College of Art and Design is situated in Calgary on the North Hill overlooking the Bow River. It is very close to the University of Calgary. It is the only public-funded Art and Design College in Canada. It was founded in the year 1926. Alberta College of Art and Design has celebrated its 75th anniversary in the year 2001. Originally a division of the Provincial Institute of Technology and Arts, it was upgraded in the year 1985 to become an autonomous body. In 1995, Alberta College of Art and Design was granted the permission for degree accreditation by the Alberta Governments’ Ministry of Advanced Education and Career Development. In the year 2000, it got the permission to grant the Bachelor of Design degree.

Courses

The Alberta College of Art and Design offers first year studies program which introduces the students to a variety of visual languages and critical thinking. The bachelor of fine arts degree is offered in ceramics, glass, jewelry, media arts & digital technologies, drawing, fiber, painting, print media and sculpture. The Alberta College of Art and Design also offers a post diploma degree program and extended studies program. Students are required to apply for graduate programs after the completion of this post diploma degree program.



Mission
The mission of Alberta College of Art and Design is to become the leading center for education and research. It also aims to provide a catalyst for creative enquiry and cultural development. The students receive the tools, techniques, intellectual stimulation and encouragement to develop and discover their individual passion and voice.
Facilities

The Alberta College of Art and Design has the Luke Lindoe library and Illingworth Gallery which is a nationally recognized public gallery. Alberta College of Art and Design also has computing and technical services. The Marion Nicoll Gallery is a student-run gallery for experimentation. It is a non-profit gallery which provides students with career-developing experience. The Institute for the Creative Process is a unique post-secondary institute which organizes various activities, enterprises and initiatives and special projects.
