Art Students League of New York



The Art Students League of New York is an art institution which was founded in the year 1875. It has been an important art institution of New York for decades. After the civil war, New York became the artistic capital and the National Academy of Design was founded in the city. By the mid-1970’s artist and students realized that the Academy could not fulfill their artistic demands. Then in 1875, it was rumored that due to financial difficulties the Academy would close, and as a result the students got alarmed. The students met their teacher Lemuel Wilmarth and the Art Students League was formed. The Art Students League of New York was and still is a cooperative society based on mutual help of all its members, including teachers and students.



Schedules

There are no set degrees, diplomas or curriculum at the Art Students League of New York. This year, at the institute, summer classes are being conducted for bronze casting, metal assemblage, drawing, printmaking, painting and sculpture. These classes span for five afternoons, five evenings, two evenings, three evenings, one evening, part-time, Saturday, Sunday or children’s weekend, etc. Apart from these classes special workshops, lectures, seminars and international workshops are also arranged at the Art Students League of New York at regular time intervals.

Motto

One of the main reasons for the continuous success of the Art Students League of New York is its long line of dedicated teachers and loyal students. The League believes that one must be there solely for the love and pursuit of art, the yearning for the exchange of artistic ideas and techniques. The Art Students League of New York boasts of notable alumnus and faculty members who have remained loyal to the League. It is an institution which has been founded by students and for students.

Facilities

The Art Students League of New York has a gallery, store, cafeteria, kiln, metal sculpture, library and lockers. The League also hosts a sale of the works of the student every year in the moth of December. All currently enrolled students can participate in this sale.
