California Institute of the Arts is located in Valencia, California. It is commonly referred as CalArts. It is the first U.S. higher educational institute which offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in visual and performing arts. California Institute of the Arts was formed in the year 1961, by the merger of Chouinard Art Institute and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music. The founder members were Walt and Roy Disney.
It moved to its present campus in November 1971 and started degree programs in dance, film and theatre. Thereafter, a graduate writing program was introduced in the year 1994. The California Institute of the Arts is funded by the contributions of Walt Disney.
Courses and Degrees
The California Institute of the Arts offers courses in art, critical studies, integrated media, music, theater, dance, film and video. The Institute offers degrees like Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts and undergraduate and advanced certificates. The bachelor degree program is an integrated four-year course. The master’s degree program spans for two years.

The California Institute of the Arts is committed to educate professional artists and skilled practitioners to the best in their respective disciplines. The main aim of California Institute of the Arts was to bring together different art forms under one roof and allow them to mix and cross-pollinate in a free-spirited environment and to create a laboratory for the arts. The Institute also challenges boundaries in both form and content and encourages the students to experiment. The Institute pays great regards to individual ideas and personal creativity.
Special Features
The California Institute of the Arts has more than hundred art galleries, sixty mid-size theaters, fifty jazz venues and twenty-five African, Latin and world music venues. The Institute organizes several theatrical performances from time-to-time. There are separate councils for student, dean and academic. The academic council meets weekly to discuss academic and extra-curricular activities while the dean council meets weekly to discuss about each school within the California Institute of the Arts.
