The Cleveland Institute of Art was established in 1882. It was initially meant to be a Western Reserve School of Design for Women. It was known as the Cleveland School of Art from 1891 to 1948. The school participated in the WPA Federal Art Project during the Great Depression. The school added map making and medical drawing to its usual curriculum during World War II. The Cleveland Institute of Art has made its place among the best ten professional art and design colleges in the country. The institute is accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. It is also a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design and the Northeast Ohio council on Higher Education. The Cleveland Institute of Art is also the main exhibition center for the “Cleveland Cinematheque”.

The Cleveland Institute of Arts was originally more focused on practical rather than academic skills. The aim of the Cleveland Institute of Art was to train designers and craftspeople. In 1947 the institute started a Bachelor of Fine Arts program. Gradually the institute incorporated more academic topics into the curriculum. By 1969 the program had expanded to five years. From 2006, the Cleveland Institute of Art started following a four year degree pattern instead of five.
