The Académie des beaux-arts or the Academy of Fine Arts France was established by the March 21st ordinance in 1816. It is one of the five academies under the Institut de France. The Académie des beaux-arts is a merger of three other academies, namely Académie de peinture et de sculpture, Académie de musique and Académie d'architecture.
History of the Académie des beaux-arts:
The Académie des beaux-arts is the heir to three other academies of painting, sculpture, architecture and music. The academy received its official name in 1803. The Académie des beaux-arts currently constitutes one of the five institutes making up the Institute of France. The Academy’s forced association with literature and archeology left no independence for fine arts. As a result, there were very few representatives within the institute. On 23rd January 1803, the Académie des beaux-arts established four bodies with 28 members. The newest of them was devoted entirely to fine arts. By 1806 the membership of the Académie des beaux-arts increased to 40. By 1816, the membership was further increased to 50 with 10 of them being foreign Associate Members and the remaining 40 being Corresponding members. On July 11 1985, the Académie des beaux-arts added a new section dedicated to creativity in cinema and audio visual stream. At present the membership consists of 55 Academicians, 16 Foreign Associate members and 55 French or foreign Corresponding Members.
Fields of Study at the Académie des beaux-arts:
Study at the Académie des beaux-arts is broken up into eight sections: Painting, Sculpture, Structure, Engraving, Musical Composition, Free Members, Artistic Creations in the cinema and audio visual field and Photographs. The section on photographs was created in 2005.
Awards and Prizes at the Académie des beaux-arts:
The Académie des beaux-arts provides six devoted prizes apart from several other awards. Prizes provided by the academy are Liliane Bettencourt Choral Singing Prize, Pierre David-Weill Drawing Prize, Pierre Cardin Prize, Nahed Ojjeh Prize, Simone and Cino Del Duca foundation Music Prize and Simone and Cino Del Duca Foundation Painting or Sculpture Prize.
