Laguna Beach, California is a dramatic region with hillsides, canyons, cliffs and sandy beaches juxtaposed to present an extraordinary scenic view. In the early 1990’s a group of artists, intellectuals and entertainers started to create a flourishing cultural community at the Laguna Beach. Open air painters like Edgar Payne and Anna Hills established the Laguna Beach Art Association. The quiet little town soon developed into a focal point for visual arts. The association that started as a retreat soon evolved into the Laguna College of Art and Design. The scenic beauty of the place provides a perfect backdrop for the art college. The official year of the establishment of the college is stated to be 1961.
Curriculum at Laguna College of Art and Design:
The Laguna College of Art and Design offers a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts with majors in Fine Arts, Illustration, Feature Animation and Graphic Design. The college also has facilities for a student to take up two majors for broader study. Since 2006 the Laguna College of Art and Design has included a graduate program finishing with a Master of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting with prominence on representational and figurative art. The student mentors and satellite MFA is available in Los Angeles. The college also formed a partnership with the Florence Academy of Art in Italy in 2006.
Facilities at Laguna College of Art and Design:
The main campus at Laguna College of Art and Design has thirteen studios. One of them is used as a student lounge for naps between classes or for doing homework. The campus also has a print lab, an “Apple Genius” bar, the administrative office and a library. The central campus is surrounded by a beautiful wood and the Laguna Coastal Wilderness Park. The seniors in MFA and BFA are allowed to use any of the five student studios assigned to them. More student studios are available at the South campus.
