The School of the Art Institute of Chicago is located in Chicago, Illinois. It is a professional fine arts college and is related to The Art Institute of Chicago. They share many managerial resources like design, construction and human resources. In the year 1866, a group of 35 artists founded Chicago Academy of Design in a studio with the purpose to set up a free school with its own art gallery. The School was modeled on other European art schools. The classes started in 1868, but the Great Chicago Fire caused a great damage to the school. In 1879, the old Institute was abandoned as it was in huge debts and a new organization, the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts was founded.
