Victorian College of the Arts is a visual and performing arts institution of education in Melbourne, Australia. On January 1, it became a part of the University of Melbourne. The Victorian College of the Arts was established on 30 November, 1972, by an act of Parliament, known as the VCA Act. The Foundation school was named the National Gallery of Victoria Art School, which was established in 1867. This school officially started in the year 1973. The School of Music was formed one year later, followed by the School of Drama in 1975. The School of Dance started in 1979. The Swinburne School of Film and Television became a part of the Victorian College of the Arts and then the College further expanded. The Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School is formally associated with the College.
Courses
The Victorian College of the Arts offers undergraduate, postgraduate, coursework and research degrees and diplomas in artistic field. The six academic disciplines of Victorian College of the Arts are art, dance, music, drama, film and television and production. There are two centers where these courses are conducted—The Centre for Ideas and The Wilin Center for Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development. The additional artistic areas include community cultural development, indigenous arts management and puppetry.
Mission
The main mission of Victorian College of the Arts is that learning comes from doing and the instructions are focused on individual and small groups. The educational programs at the Victorian College of the Arts are mainly studio and performance based and underpinned by a common curriculum which examines the interaction between artistic practice and wider social, political and cultural contexts.
Facilities
The Victorian College of the Arts offers language and learning skills, medical services, library, artist booking service, computer services, disability liaison unit and Melbourne University Student programs. The library of The University of Melbourne has extensive library services which can be accessed by the students of Victorian College of the Arts.
