Pencil Sketches

Pencil sketch is one of the popular drawing methods in the field of arts. Sketch is a fast freehand drawing which is not anticipated to be a finished work. It features a number of overlapping lines. By sketching in pencil one can try out various ideas before the final composition. Sketching sharpens the artistic development of students.

Graphite pencils are a new invention but its history goes back to ancient times. The Renaissance artists used a silver stylus to draw sketches on special paper. They also used charcoal, chalk or pen and ink to sketch.

There are various sketching equipments you need before pencil sketching. Pencils of varying hardness, paper and erasers are needed. The pencils come in varying degrees of hardness with grading like 2H, H and HB. The softer gradings are B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B and 6B. While sketching, one should use the wedge instead of the point of the pencil.

The sketching paper also comes in various types with rough and smooth appearance. While pencil sketching you should start from hard leads to softer ones. The sketching technique includes drawing the shadow only as the white of the paper reflects the light. You can use a kneaded eraser which helps in erasing the graphite or charcoal.
